Mercedes turned the SL into an open-top roadster with an F1 Halo Bar

The Mythos PureSpeed Concept is limited to just 250 units worldwide.

Mercedes-AMG on Wednesday revealed the first car in its ultra-limited, expensive “Mythos” series called the PureSpeed. It’s an open two-seater roadster that draws inspiration from the company’s iconic vintage racing cars and Formula 1.

Although Mercedes isn’t saying it, the PureSpeed is very clearly based on the company’s SL convertible, using that car’s headlights and taillights. The front bumper eschews the traditional Mercedes grille for a simplified grille without a shark nose on top, while the lower grille has a white-painted AMG logo.

The windshield is gone, replaced by a halo structure like you’d see on an F1 car. The flying struts behind the seats are inspired by the 300 SLR that Stirling Moss and Dennis Jenkinson used to win the Mille Miglia in 1955, according to Mercedes. The paint, which goes from Le Mans red to graphite gray, is inspired by the Mercedes that won the Targa Florio in 1924.

The other parts of the car used knowledge from the Mercedes-AMG One hypercar. The bottom of the PureSpeed has carbon fiber that improves aerodynamics. Carbon wheel covers are also there for aero efficiency, optimizing airflow around the wheels and improving brake cooling.

“The Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed Concept offers a glimpse into what is perhaps the most direct way to experience performance and driving pleasure,” says AMG Chairman Michael Schiebe. “Radically open, neither the roof nor the windshield separates the two occupants from the elements. You can experience light, air and passion unfiltered with all your senses. As our first Mythos car concept, it embodies the highest level of exclusivity. Design elements like the HALO also create a Formula 1 feel.”

Mercedes didn’t detail the PureSpeed’s powertrain in its announcement, though it’s likely to borrow the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 from the SL63, whether in base 577-horsepower form or in E Performance guise with 805 hp. with Either way, this is probably the most exciting SL you can buy right now.

If you can get your hands on one, that is. Mercedes is limiting production to just 250 units, and they will only be available to “the most dedicated Mercedes‑Benz enthusiasts and collectors,” according to the brand.

Pricing has not been disclosed, although we suspect select buyers will have no problem paying a premium for such an exceptional product.
