Neil Druckman ‘Not quite’ says Naughty Dog’s next game ‘could redefine basic perceptions of gaming’ – IGN

Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann took to X/Twitter to clarify that some of what came out in his interview with Sony “wasn’t quite” what he said, including that the next game from the developer of The Last of Us could “redefine mainstream perceptions of gaming.”

While we still don’t know what Naughty Dog’s next game will be, Druckmann discussed his excitement about it with Sony. However, according to Druckmann, his answer was slightly different from what was done in the original interview.

“That’s not exactly what I said,” Druckmann said of the “may redefine mainstream perceptions of gaming” line. “In editing my unintelligible answers in my recent interview with Sony, some of my words, context and intent were unfortunately lost. Well, here’s the full long rambling answer to the last question about our future game.”

You can read Druckmann’s full response below, after he was asked, “As we discuss future innovations, is there a personal vision or dream project that you hope to see realized in entertainment right now?”

“Well, I was very lucky in that I already had it,” Druckman said. “I got the chance to do some of my dream projects. I’m currently working on a new one. And this is probably the most excited I’ve been for a project yet. I can’t talk about it or our bosses will get And I guess there’s something happening now that I think is really cool, which is a new appreciation of games that I’ve never seen.

“Like when I was growing up, gaming was more of a kid thing. Now it is clear to all. But it’s like, if you’re a gamer, you know about the potential of games, and non-gamers, they don’t know. I really know what they’re missing when we made The Last of Us as a TV show, and why I wanted it to be good so much, because I wanted that to happen, which is like someone who’s going to watch the show and love it and fall in love with these characters the way we’ve fallen in love with these characters and their story, and then we’ll realize, ‘wait, this is it based on a video game?’ and then go and explore the game and just see the wealth of narrative and everything that happens in the game.

“So now I feel like the games are in the spotlight. And you know, Fallout just came out. And it’s a big success for Amazon. And I find that really exciting. Not because games should be movies or should be TV shows, but I think it just kind of opened the eyes of a bunch of people who just weren’t aware of the kind of experiences that exist in games.

“I think we’ve hit a tipping point right now where it’s about to take off, where people are realizing, ‘Oh my God, there are all these amazing motion experiences in games!'” So, not only am I excited about this game, that we’re doing — and it’s something that’s really fresh for us — but I’m also excited to see how the world reacts to it because of The Last of Us, and the success of the show, people even outside of gaming are looking at us to see what it’s like , which we will explain further. I’m very excited to see what the reaction is going to be for this thing – and I’ve already said too much about it. So you’re asking me about my dream projects, that I’ve worked on my favorite games with amazing collaborators.”

So while Druckmann said this new project is “probably the most excited” he’s been about one yet and “something really fresh for us,” he didn’t quite say “it could redefine mainstream perceptions of gaming.” What he further said was that he was “very excited to see what the reaction is going to be for this thing — and I’ve already said too much about it.”

Naughty Dog confirmed that it was working on a new project in March 2023, and it would be the first new game from the studio since 2020’s The Last of Us: Part 2. Naughty Dog also confirmed in 2023 that it had canceled its The Last of Us is a multiplayer game and will focus on single player in the future.
