Bizarre Coin-Flopping Counterspell Highlights New MH3 Leaks & Spoilers!

The release of Modern Horizons 3 is coming at us awfully fast. Over the course of the last week, many intriguing and powerful spoilers have been officially revealed. From strong reprints set to make their modern debut to elite utility lands that can take over games, this set is full of great cards.

Today we have even more pure MH3 cards to discuss, including divas Counteraction a variant that uses the mechanics of flipping a coin. It should be noted that while some of these cards have been officially reviewed, others have simply been leaked. As such, these cards may turn out to be fake.

We’ll make sure to highlight which cards are official, but for the purposes of this article, we’ll rate all cards under the assumption that they are indeed genuine. If you want to wait for official disclosures, consider this your spoiler alert. With that out of the way, let’s take a closer look at what our next round of MH3 maps has to offer.

Reverse the polarity

Reverse the polarity

First up, we have an exciting map previewed by Skulk, the Skulking. As you might expect from a card that involves coin flips, Invert Polarity can range from mediocre to game-breaking depending on the situation. At least Invert Polarity will function as a Rejection for the Izzet deck. Cancel isn’t terrible, but it’s certainly too ineffective for a format like Modern.

However, Invert Polarity has a huge upside if you can win the coin toss. Countering a bomb like The only ring or Primal Titan is nice, but gaining control of it can spell doom for the opponent. Not only did your opponent waste their mana in these scenarios, but now you can get rid of their top tier permanent under your control.

Invert Polarity will almost certainly be a staple for Izzet Commander decks everywhere. Whether it will truly reach the bar for Constructed play remains to be seen. Some players are confident in the card not good enough for Modernwhile others believe it will be a powerful addition to the format. We’ve seen high variance cards play in Modern before (take Hot inquiry in Hollow one shells, for example), but many of them fail. We’ll just have to wait and see how it performs.

Monumental Henge

Monumental HengeMonumental Henge

Next we have a land previewed by Magic: The Gathering JP in the form of Monumental Henge. Monumental Henge wasn’t originally revealed in English, but through translation we have a good idea of what the map does:

Monumental Henge enters the battlefield tapped unless you control Plains.

{T}: Add {W}

{2}{W}{W}, {T} : Look at the top five cards of your library. You can reveal a history card among them and put it into your hand. Place the rest at the bottom of your library in random order.

Monumental Henge appears to be the white variant of the MH3 “Checklands” cycle with unique abilities activated. We recently talked about how extremely powerful it is Shifting Woodland is, and while Monumental Henge isn’t all that exciting, it has some potential.

In control decks with enough historical cards available, Monumental Henge provides great flood protection. Vantress Castle fills a similar role in Pioneer, but Monumental Henge has the ability to actually generate card advantage.

Azorius control decks are currently being used in Modern The only ring, Narset, Parterre of veils, Teferi, Time Wandererand several lands as Minamo, Water’s Edge School such as historical maps. As such, there aren’t many hits, but Henge digs pretty deep with each activation. Of course, in more specialized history-themed Commander decks, Monumental Henge is a slam dunk. Using your land to mine for your strongest cards is a great opportunity, and Henge delivers.

Party thrasher

Party thrasherParty thrasher

Party Thrasher is our first leak found via Whatnot. It’s a bit of a tight map, but has some notable synergies with some pure red legendaries. There are multiple commanders that benefit when you discard cards or play cards from exile, and Party Thrasher works well alongside all of them.

Probably the best commanders to pair with Party Thrasher are Prosper, Tom Bound and Pia Nalaar, Consul of the Revival. In Prosper’s shell, Party Thrasher puts even more cards into exile for you to play and generate treasure alongside Prosper. If you have a wide board, Party Thrasher can also greatly reduce the cost of spells you cast from exile. In Pia’s case, Party Thrasher makes it easy to start flooding the board with 1/1 tokens. From there, those 1/1 tokens can be used to summon big spells from exile.

As for legendaries that benefit from discarding Party Thrasher cards, Inti, seneschal of the Sun immediately comes to mind. When you discard Party Thrasher cards, you can banish additional cards thanks to Inti. Once again, Party Thrasher can help you pay for non-creature spells you banish, making it more likely that you’ll get your money’s worth from Inti. Ultimately, Party Thrasher looks more like a Commander card than a Modern card, but it’s still a sweet inclusion.

Send to memory

Send to memorySend to memory

Finally, we wanted to show a leaked, sweet piece of counter magic. Consign to Memory is a strange hybrid between I’m suffocating and Ceremonial rejection. Ceremonious Rejection has seen play in the past as a way to combat decks like Tron that focus primarily on colorless spells. Narrow applications of the map, however, often result in the map being cut from sideboards. Consign to Memory solves this problem.

Consign to Memory is definitely not Stifle. Not being able to counter activated abilities means you can’t mess with opposing Fetchlands. Consign to Memory is much tamer as a result, but can still be useful. Countering Solitude’s enter-the-battlefield effect for just one mana, for example, can be quite useful.

With that in mind, Consign to Memory has strong uses outside of matches like Tron and Affinity. Against control, Consign to Memory counters The One Ring straight up while messing with triggered abilities from Solitude and Leyline binding. Against Esper Gorio’s Revenge projectiles countering the triggered ability of Athraxa, Great Unifier can be important. When facing Domain Zoo, Consign to Memory can counter Descendant of Draco either you mess with Binding or Ragavan, Nimble Thief.

Consign can even be replicated as a last resort. This can happen when a creature coming into play causes multiple abilities to trigger. Replica can counter Tron if the opponent casts a haymaker with The Shrine of Ugin in game too. Consign, along with the other cards we’ve featured today, looks like a really cool design. With Mh3 out, we can’t wait to see how the Modern metagame develops.
