Match Composer preview | Halo Infinite

Tenrai IV begins next Tuesday, June 4th, and Halo Infinite will receive an update along with the launch of this latest operation. Players can expect several fixes under the hood, but the most exciting component of this next content update will be the release of the long-awaited Matching Composer matchmaking functionality!

Today we want to give you a quick overview of what you can expect and how this feature will offer more flexibility to reproduce the experiences you enjoy most.

So what exactly is a “Match Composer?”

This new matchmaking feature allows players to select a high-level playlist based on criteria such as team composition (4v4, BTB, FFA, etc.) and then select the specific modes you prefer to play (Husky Raid, Team Slayer, Team Snipers, etc.).

Initially, players could simply select “Team Arena,” which could eventually put you in any of the supported game modes in this playlist. Now you’ll be able to “compose” your match experience from the ground up and search for and play only the specific types of experiences you want to play in a playlist. You can compose parameters and search one playlist at a time.

This new feature not only gives you more control to play what you want to play, but also allows us to take niche offerings that were previously limited in rotation time and turn them into a permanent selection of Match Composer mode (eg Team Snipers is now playable all the time in the quickplay list).

At face value, Halo InfiniteThe matchmaking menus will look pretty similar – you’ll be presented with a list of available playlists, and if you select a playlist with Match Composer enabled (marked in the description), the next screen will offer a list of all available modes to choose from. By default, every mode option will be enabled to help speed up questing and get players into matches quickly, but players can select and deselect as many or as many as they wish.

One important note here is that selecting fewer options adds more restrictions to your match search parameters and may result in longer wait times depending on the current online population and overall popularity of the modes you’ve selected. If you’re not picky and just want to get into a 4v4 match as quickly as possible, leave everything selected. If you only want to play Team Snipers, but not many other players online have selected Team Snipers, it may take longer to get into a game.

PLAYLIST SUGGESTIONS

Most, but not all of the Halo InfinitePlaylists will support the Match Composer feature when the feature is released next Tuesday. Basically, most social playlists will have composer matching options, but ranked ones don’t. Here’s the list of Social Match Composer-enabled playlists that will be available at launch:

TENRAI IV
[FFA] [8 Players] Enjoy Tenrai themed content including new community modes as well as the new original Hanami community map.

This is the new Tenrai Operation themed playlist available for a limited time.

FAST GAME
[4v4] Everything 4v4 from Team Slayer to Husky Raid. Choose your preferred 4v4 experiences here.

This playlist will include most of the Halo Infinite4v4 social game modes and offers tons of different choices ranging from Mini Slayer to CTF to Dodgeball and more. Players who only want to play Forge maps created by the community can choose the “Community” version of a specific mode (ie “Community Slayer”).

TEAM PAIRS
[2v2] Different games for teams of two. Work together or die alone; teamwork is crucial here.

FLAME PIT
[FFA] [8 Players] A mix of Slayer variants and other Free for All modes. You are alone, Spartan.

INFECTION
[FFA] [12 Players] Infect the enemy team or survive until time runs out. Players killed by infected become infected.

BIG TEAM BATTLE
[12v12] For those who prefer a bigger fight. Here you can choose between standard BTB, BTB Heaves and other different BTB modes.

Mode selection options include entries from the original BTB Core, BTB Social and BTB Heavies playlists such as Total Control, Team Snipers, Stockpile, Fiesta Slayer and more.

BATTLE OF TROOPS
[8v8] Your traditional solution to large scale warfare. Spice up your experience with Team Slayer and objective game types.

Mode choices include CTF, King of the Hill, Slayer, One Flag CTF, Land Grab, and Total Control.

LEGENDARY CRIME
[PVE] [LEGENDARY] [4 Players] Carry the fight with the Outcasts. Spice up your Firefight experience with different legendary difficulty modes.

FIREFIGHT HEROIC
[PVE] [HEROIC] [4 Players] Carry the fight with the Outcasts. Spice up your Firefight experience with different Heroic difficulty modes.

FIREFIGHT NORMAL
[PVE] [NORMAL] [4 Players] Carry the fight with the Outcasts. Spice up your Firefight experience with different normal difficulty modes.

Each of the three Firefight playlists offers the same options (regular Firefight: KotH, Gruntpocalypse, or Gruntpocalypse Fiesta), but are differentiated at the playlist level based on difficulty selection.

CLASSIFIED PLAYLISTS

I assure Halo Infinite‘s ranked experience maintains the highest level of competitive integrity, these playlists will not support Match Composing. However, the consolidation that Match Composer offers us on the social side means that we can expand the core ranked playlists with this release to include:

RANKED ARENA
[4v4] – Loading Bandit Evo. Motion tracking is disabled. Team Slayer, CTF, Oddball, KOTH and Strongholds game types. Compete against other Spartans to win or increase your rank.

CLASSIFIED ASSASSIN
[4v4] – Loading Bandit Evo. Motion tracking and Friendly Fire are disabled.

CLASSIFIED DOUBLES
[2v2] – Kill the enemy team. Loading the Bandit Evo. Motion tracking is disabled.

And, “CLASSIFIED TACTICAL” will be available as a ranked rotation offering starting next week.

PLAY YOUR WAY

The composer of the match comes into his own Halo Infinite as part of a free update alongside the next Operation: Tenrai IV next Tuesday, June 4th. Check back with Halo Waypoint next week for the full patch notes and additional details on the update and what you’ll find in the Tenrai Operation Pass and Exchange refreshes.

We’re excited to get this highly desired feature into your hands and will be closely monitoring feedback and game telemetry to ensure that Match Composer delivers a great online experience.

See you online Spartans!
