The Ford Mustang GTD has an optional Performance Package

Ford announced multiple packages for the $325,000 GTD and revealed the interior ahead of the GT3’s Le Mans race debut.

The Mustang heads to Le Mans in GT3 racing guise, and to mark the occasion, Ford has new information on the street-legal version. In addition to getting our first look at the interior of the Mustang GTD, we learn that multiple option packages will be available. And one of them is an implementation package.

Simply called the Performance pack, the upgrades are focused on weight and aerodynamics. The front has dive planes and a large splitter, while further back a drag reduction system has been added to the massive rear wing. Underbody flaps are also part of the package and are included with everything, which is a lightweight package that eliminates sound deadening. You also get the 20-inch magnesium wheels seen on the car pictured here, wearing a new paint shade called Chroma Flame.

Ford did not mention the rationale for offering a performance upgrade to the top-of-the-line Mustang, nor was a price mentioned. But Ford says the package will be key to the GTD doing a sub-seven-minute lap at the Nurburgring.

“Many sports cars stand out for one thing. But for a car to do a fast lap of the Nürburgring, it has to be great at everything,” said Mustang GTD chief engineer Greg Goodall. “Cornering, grip, braking, acceleration, there’s not one area where it doesn’t shine.”

In addition to the Performance Package and the Lightweight Package, Ford will offer the GTD in a special Carbon Series that leaves the carbon fiber bodywork unpainted on the hood, roof and hood sections. It also adds a magnetite coating to the wheels, whether they are aluminum or magnesium. It can be matched with one of six standard exterior colors, including the aforementioned Chroma Flame.

We also have our first look inside GTD. Things look very Mustang with the integrated 13.2-inch and 12.4-inch screens found on the Premium trims. The GTD gets standard Recaro seats, special graphics for the displays, titanium gearshift paddles and two new buttons on the center console. One opens the various tracking applications offered by GTD. The other activates the front axle lift function. A GTD-specific steering wheel has been installed, and we’ve already checked the clear rear window to observe the action of the piston suspension.

Ford is planning a two-year GTD series. An official production number has not been given, but estimates are around 1,400. Pricing is also an estimate at this stage, but it won’t be less than $325,000. However, Ford received over 7,500 applications from people in the US and Canada interested in buying one. This process is now complete, but requests for buyers in Europe are about to begin.
