The Nissan GT-R is dead

These two special variants are the final R35s for the North American market.

2024 Nissan GT-R Skyline Edition

After 17 years, the R35 Nissan GT-R is going away. Nissan announced Friday that production of the GT-R for the North American market will end in October, with two special models, the Skyline and Takumi Editions, to celebrate the car’s global achievements.

We’ve reached out to Nissan to confirm whether production of the GT-R for other markets will continue beyond October and will update if and when we hear back. But even if the GT-R remains in production beyond October, it certainly won’t be for long.

The Skyline Edition builds on the base “Premium” model and is available exclusively in Bayside Blue on a blue interior. Its price is 132,985 dollars. The Takumi Edition is a slightly modified version of the 2024 GT-R T-Spec, painted exclusively in Midnight Purple and sporting carbon-ceramic brakes, gold RAYS forged wheels and wider front fenders. There’s a gold VIN plate in the engine bay and red lettering on the exterior badges honoring the takumi, master craftsmen who make the GT-R. Its price is 152,985 dollars.

Both, as always, feature a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-6 producing 565 horsepower, a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, and four-wheel drive. There is no information on production numbers for these limited edition models.

When it arrived in 2007, the GT-R shocked the performance car world by punching so much above its weight. It remade the world in its image, forcing so many other automakers to work hard to beat the killer Nissan. But in the years since then, Nissan has struggled, and as performance cars have progressed, the GT-R has only received a few updates and two facelifts in its 17 years.

In a statement, Nissan said that “[w]although the R35 GT-R leaves an unforgettable legacy, Nissan is now hyper-focused on the future and the next era of exciting performance innovation.” Nissan showed an electric GT-R concept, the Hyper Force, but it may not appear before the end of the decade.
