How to beat Rellana, Twin Moon Knight in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

Relana, Twin Moon Knight presents an entirely different kind of challenge in Elden Ring‘c The Shadow of Erdtree DLC compared to what you faced in Belurat. Relana is fast and ruthless, with brutal, almost unbreakable combos, high defenses, and some deadly magic – but she has one major weakness.

Ours Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree the manual explains how to defeat Rellanaincluding details on her weaknesses and how to prepare for the boss fight.

Rellana location in the Elden Ring DLC

Rellana is waiting around in the Ensis Moongazing Grounds at the eastern edge of Castle Ensis. She is a must boss and impossible to miss if you want to get to Scadu Altus this way, unless you miss Castle Ensis by taking the long way across the Ellac River. There’s a graceful spot just outside her arena, as with all bosses, and two NPC summons: Dryleaf Dane and Needle Knight Leda.

Note that any summoned NPC or human ally will increase the boss’s health, but having both on hand also makes for a useful set of distractions as you learn how Rellana works — watching her cut down your allies.

Rellana’s weaknesses and how to prepare

Choosing the best weapon for Relana is something you’ll probably have to experiment with as you get used to her moveset to see what works best for your style. Heavy weapons can take down a significant amount of her HP, but the problem is that it’s hard to land a hit with one. Relana moves quickly in general and can dodge heavy attacks and follow them up with a strong flurry of counter strikes.

I fought with more than two hits at once even with a katana. However, the straight sword and light greatsword fighting styles are flexible enough to allow you to land a few attacks—even an Ashes of War skill at the right time—and retreat while Relana recovers. Miladywhich you can find near Miquella’s cross at the Castle Ensis checkpoint is a strong choice for this battle.

Use a melee weapon that scales with intelligence or faith if you’re running a magic build, and keep in mind that spells won’t do much against Relana, as she has one of the highest magic defenses of all enemies. However, magic has its place in this battle as she is prone to frostbite.

She is also weak to lightningbut it’s a lot harder to get a good lightning build together if you don’t already have one. Frozen Lightning Spear takes advantage of both weaknesses, though since Relana tends to dodge to the side, she often puts herself out of range of the spell’s initial hit and subsequent explosion. This works best if Rellana is distracted with an NPC summon or your Spirit Ash.

An easier way to apply Frostbite is with Glintstone Ice Rock. It has high Frostbite scaling and unlike Ranni’s Dark Moon, it tracks your target enemy and has a faster cast animation. Its low intelligence requirement of 15 means that even strength or dexterity can use this spell. Rellana won’t take much damage from the Icecrag itself, even if you have high intelligence, but it will trigger a Frostbite status after about four or five hits. Frostbite deals heavy damage and increases the amount of damage Rellana takes from magic and force for approximately 15 to 20 seconds.

You can also skip the spells and use Freezing fat on your weapon instead, though the Frostbite build-up becomes slower if you can’t land multiple hits in a row.

Either way, you’ll know it’s working if you see a frosty cloud hovering around Rellana. You can potentially get away with just using Frostbite to wear her down if your Spirit Ash is aggressive enough to distract her for most of the fight. However, when Frostbite is active, you should try to land a few hits with your weapon and take advantage of the ailment while it lasts.

As always, make sure your weapon and Spirit Ash are upgraded as high as you can get them. If you’re out of Blacksmith’s Stones or Glovewort, head back to The Lands Between to get some Bell Camps for Maiden Husks.

How to beat Rellana, Twin Moon Knight in Elden Ring DLC

Rellana’s attacks are fast and fluid, and she strings multiple combos together. Sometimes she changes which attacks she uses in the middle and sometimes even skips them completely to land a powerful hit when you least expect it.

As we suggested with the Divine Beast’s Dancing Lion boss, you might want to consider saving footage of your fight so you can look back later and watch how it behaves without trying not to die.

Rellana phase 1 boss fight

In general, you can expect three parts from Rellana’s combos.

  1. The first is an opening strike, usually with a single swing of one of her swords.
  2. Then comes a follow-up from the other sword, which can be an upward slash or an overhead slash. Relana can add a few of these in the middle of her combo, or a downward slash from both swords, or even a small spinning slash.
  3. The combo ends with a strong finisher as she crosses the two swords before taking them down with a powerful strike.

Rellana can cancel her attacks and switch to a different combo move and seamlessly switch between targeting a summon or you. This all sounds a little overwhelming—and it feels overwhelming to play at first—but Rellana’s attacks have one thing in common: they all face forward. Your first instinct might be to backtrack and get away when she launches her barrage of attacks, but dodging forward keeps you out of harm’s way more effectively.

Still, Relana moves fast, so you won’t have much time to rest after you escape unless she’s distracted by something else.

Her other attacks include a powerful thrust followed by a second thrust or strike from her other sword. Rellana also summons Carian Swords that fly at you after a few seconds, similar to what the Carian Knight did earlier in Castle Ensis, and will sometimes shoot an arc of magical energy at you. Dodge forward or to the side when you see her hand and sword glow blue.

The Fallen Carian Princess also has a sneaky gimmick that makes most strong attacks and complex weapon skills obsolete. When you start performing one of these attacks, Relana spins 270 degrees – that’s three quarters of a circle – and strikes you with one of her swords upwards. Sometimes she will follow this up with a downward stroke as well. Your skill is missing and you also get a lot of your HP.

Stick to normal attacks when Relana is against you, and only go for something nicer if she’s busy with another character.

After a few minutes, Relana will summon a Carian Greatsword and perform a vertical slash that you can dodge to the side to avoid, followed a second later by a wide horizontal slash. Dodging forward or to the side works for this one, but if you miss the right timing you’ll take heavy damage.

Phase 2 of the Rellana boss fight

Things pick up even more after Rellana’s HP drops to half, and now is the time to summon your Spirit Ash if you haven’t already. She pauses for a moment and ignites the sword in her right hand with magic and the sword in her left hand with fire, and will follow with either a storm of fire that spreads in a diagonal pattern around her, or a wave of sword strikes that deal fire damage if they connect.

If it’s the firestorm, make sure you’re not standing on a fiery spot before it erupts. If it’s the sword strikes, try to avoid them.

Rellana’s basic attack combos are unchanged in this phase, though they can deal magic and fire damage if they connect. However, she also has some new tricks up her sleeve.

Her sword summons are more like Greatblade’s Phalanx than Glintblade’s Phalanx, but even though they’ll do more damage if they hit you, you can still dodge them the same way as before. Rellana will also use her Carian Sword Slash skill more often and aggressively, often firing multiple arcs in quick succession.

Relana will also occasionally push the two swords forward and create a small tunnel of flame. Dodge away from it and use the few seconds until it finishes the animation to get in a hit or two.

Once Rellana’s HP reaches about a third of its maximum total, she will occasionally jump into the air and summon two moons. One moon crashes into the ground after a second or two and sends out a shockwave of magic, and the second moon follows right after. Rellana herself then returns back to the battlefield and sends out an even bigger wave of magic.

These moves happen quickly, and not only are they hard to dodge, but getting hit by all three—or even just Rellana’s last drop—is enough to send you back to the nearest place of grace. Given the nature of the attacks as circular waves, your best bet for avoiding them is to dodge forward just as they make contact with the ground. Alternatively, if you’re very fast and Rellana isn’t in the center of the arena, you can retreat to the far end of the room and avoid damage that way.

You might also get lucky and completely avoid this last trick of hers if you push the attack hard enough and continue Frostbite.

Defeating Rellana earns you her Remembrance, which you can give to Enia in the Roundtable Hold in exchange for Rellana’s Glintblade Swords or her Twin Moon Sorcery.
