Canon Fodder: Digsite ‘n’ Discourse

Welcome back to Canon Fodder, your monthly celebration of all things fiction!

We have some new knowledge about Digsite, some questions and answers, new Armory Infinitum login, a massive body of community-generated content, and more – let’s get right down to it…

SHIELDING SHIPS

Last week we launched a new Digsite blog (check out the Digsite Deep-Dive!) that showed off what’s arrived with the second release of the modding pool. As has become something of a tradition, there are certain aspects of this old content on the cutting room floor that make their way back into halo the main canon of the universe.

Technicallythis is seen in a major canonical source (namely as a one-panel easter egg in the ‘Boot Camp’ series of Fall of Reach comic), but we wanted to give it a more formal debut…

The United Nations Security “Shield Generator Ship” was originally conceived for Halo 2, bearing a similar profile to the Albatross ship, but on a larger scale. Here’s a look at a few never-before-seen concept sketches from Halo 2.

INTRODUCED SERVICE: 2552
MANUFACTURER: Water Division (Repair)
CREW: 10
LENGTH: 322.5 ft (98.3 m)

Antaeus was a heavy freighter modified with salvaged Covenant shield generators. It serves as a research and development platform for reverse engineering capital shield generators and methods for integrating alien technology with human power systems and ship architecture. The most significant changes to the ship were the installation of an improved fusion power plant and the inclusion of four shield generators recovered from the Covenant’s deployment towers.

The ship was ready for service in late 2551, but remained docked at the Concorde Shipyards located in Sol’s Oort Cloud until the end of the war, although it was brought into operational readiness during the Covenant siege of Earth. Various simulations tested the ship’s usefulness in ground combat operations, but the UN Security Council prioritized the completion of the UNSC infinity over bringing more of these ships into active service.

DISCORD CONVERSATION

Every month on the official Halo Discord there is a Question of the Month channel where we give the community prompts to answer. This month the question is:

Someone who has little or no experience with halo walks up to you and asks, “So what is it halo for, right?”

How do you describe the story and plot? Do you go for the all-too-simple “The Master Chief saves the day” or do you go a little deeper? What do you think is the most important thing someone should know about halo story?

Naturally, people have very different thoughts on topics like this, gravitating towards different aspects of gaming and the universe, essentially guaranteeing a variety of different answers.

FOCUS ON THE FLASH POINT

Designed for two or more players, Halo: Flashpoint brings the wargaming arena into tabletop miniatures, along with a range of classic game modes, troop types and weapons. Discover an exciting game that’s easy to learn, challenging to master and rewarding cool thinking under fire.

Just the other week, Mantic Games aired a painting challenge between them and Army Painter to show off the game and its miniatures. Check out the video below!

Choose to fight as Spartans or Outcasts and prepare for the ultimate tabletop tactical experience.

PUBLIC INQUIRIES

We’ve heard you like Q&As, and while it’s rather rare to do them in bulk, we think Canon Fodder will be a good place to answer random queries that pop up in halo a community that relates to history and the universe – just like some of the old issues did.

Sometimes these can be considered more “basic” questions, simply indicating where you can find certain answers or elements of halothe history of , other times they may relate to deeper knowledge and be drawn from previous questions and answers, but we hope this will be a useful addition to our monthly feature.

The Sangheili are some of the most fascinating lenses to look through halo universe and there are many stories told through their eyes. Here are some recommendations:

Gamestrider09: How the Flood got aboard the UNSC In the Amber Clad?

Upon arriving in Delta Halo around mid Halo 2the Chief Warrant Officer was deployed to destroy the Prophet of Regret, while Commander Miranda Keyes headed to the installation’s library to secure the Index, the device that would allow the Covenant to activate the ring.

However, Delta Halo’s library also happened to be where a quarantine zone was established to contain a large outbreak of flooding. In fact, the UN Security Council In the Amber Clad can be seen in the skybox during the Quarantine Zone mission in relative proximity to the gondolas that lead to the Library.

Upon securing the Index, Keyes is incapacitated by Tartarus and brought to High Charity – along with Sergeant Avery Johnson. From there, we can turn to what the 2022 edition has to offer Halo Encyclopedia tells us to fill in the rest.

“What remained of the ship’s crew valiantly defended it against the emerging threat of the Flood, but in the end they failed. During the bitter engagement, the dressed up was captured by the parasite and eventually used to infiltrate the Greater Mercy, which ultimately proved to be an important but costly factor in the Covenant’s demise.”

ARMOR INFINITUM

The Elutuzem-pattern long shooter — better known as the stalker rifle — was a new weapon added to the sandbox of Halo Infinite. You’ve no doubt become quite adept at using it over the past few years with aiming skills to deal with Kig-Yar on legendary difficulty.

When you encounter the high value target known as Barroth, a Kig-Yar marksman, you can acquire the special weapon variant Stalker Rifle Ultra.

Halo Infinite screenshot of high value target Barroth

From his vantage point atop a cluster of alloy columns, Arch Cordat Barot had a full view of the surrounding terrain.

Baroth was stationed near the Riven Gate, an outpost that was built to serve as a key control point for this local area of Oth Coron, effectively locking down the remaining human troops that had scattered after the fall of their frigate, which had become Outpost Tremonius.

Next to the Riven Gate was a large fissure, a trench that appeared to be the connecting point for a series of buttresses that served as the ‘spine’ for the ring’s reforming landmasses. And beyond, on the other side of the trench, lay a small island where one of the United Nations Security Council’s forward operating bases—labeled “FOB November”—was now occupied by Outcast forces. It was surrounded by a small lake that led to a Forerunner beacon tower that continued to emit energy pulses at regular intervals.

But as Barrott took aim through the scope of his stalker rifle, increasing the magnification with his connected eyepiece cap, he noticed something new…

The black ‘road’ kicked up sand and mud in the wake of a human vehicle, in which he spotted a set of five human soldiers, and in the driver’s seat the unmistakable sight of a Spartan.

Although Barroth boasted an impressive kill record as an archer, his skill and prowess earning him initiation into the ranks of the Bloodstars, his goals were firmly set on a coveted position in the Hand of Atriox, directly serving Warlord Escharum himself. For this he had to kill a Spartan.

“Prepare an ambush!” He screamed through his native connection. “New prey, the greatest human prize of all in the vicinity!”

The Spartan would undoubtedly retake the UNSC base and Barot would not interfere. It was an opportunity to watch the human warrior in action and hopefully see his accompanying lesser soldiers cut down in the firefight that would ensue. After that, there was no doubt that he would come back here. He could have warned Riven Gate…but why risk losing the glory of the kill?

Barroth once again aimed his modified stalker rifle and waited for his moment.
