Master the power of darkness with this shadow Erdtree Katana

The Sword of the Night is a katana found only in Elden Ring‘c The Shadow of Erdtree extension. This is an excellent weapon for skill builders looking for something fresh, but it’s worth noting that obtaining it will require you to complete a relatively long quest. If you’re ready, though, this ranks as one of the best new DLC weapons.

Here’s what you need to know about the Sword of the Night and where to find it.

Sword of Night stats and features

The Sword of Night has a weight of 6.5 and requires the following characteristics to master:

The weapon is equipped with Ash of War: Witching Hour Slash. This ash of war imbues your katana with darkness before unleashing a flurry of attacks. These attacks cannot be blocked by enemies or other players. The ability can be charged for extra damage, though you have to be careful to time this correctly so you don’t get caught in the animation during an incoming hit.

Sword of Night can be upgraded to +10 with Dark Forgestones.

Sword of Night item description

The Sword of the Night’s item description reads:

“A sword of all-consuming, bottomless black that absorbs even the light that shines upon it. Wielded by Jolan, Hand with the Sword of Night.

The blade of the sword is only semi-corporeal and therefore cannot be fully protected by it.

Where to find the sword of the night

Getting your hands on the Sword of the Night won’t be easy, but follow us and we’ll get you there. You’ll need to visit the Cathedral of Manus Metyr in the western part of Scadu Altus, where you’ll find an NPC named Count Ymir sitting on a throne. It will send you on a series of quests involving numerous finger ruins throughout the Shadowlands.

On your first visit to Count Ymir, he will give you a map and a necklace with holes. You’ll need to take this to Rhia’s Finger Ruins (accessible via the South Shore area). Once you arrive, approach the bell (finger?) in the center of the ruins to get the Crimson Seed Talisman +1 as a reward.

Return to Count Ymir after visiting Rhia’s Finger Ruins to receive a new map along with Beloved Stardust. You’ll need to take this item to Dheo’s Finger Ruins, which are extremely well hidden behind a statue near the Back Gate Site of Grace in the Shadow Keep.

Approach the statue in a room next to the Place of Grace and use the “Oh Mother” gesture.

This will open a path to the Hinterlands that leads directly to Dheo’s Finger Ruins. Once again interact with the bell (finger?) in the center of the ruins to get the Cerulean Seed Talisman +1.

Return to talk to Count Ymir once more to get a final card. Then reset the area by teleporting out of the Cathedral of Manus Methir and then back into it. You will find that Count Ymir has disappeared. However, you can approach the throne and interact with it to take you down to the ruins of Miir’s Fingers.

At the end of this new area, you’ll face Methir, the boss of the Mother of Fingers. With adequate levels and enough Scadutree shards collected, she is one of the simpler and easier DLC main bosses.

When Metyr, Mother of Fingers falls to your might, go back and interact with the throne a second time to spawn the invader Swordhand of Night Jolan. It’s a simple NPC fight and doesn’t take long to handle. However, when she dies, Count Ymir will reappear, so be ready for another battle.

Count Ymir’s boss, Mother of Fingers, doesn’t have a lot of HP, so you can defeat him pretty quickly with high-damage spells or abilities. The only major concern in the fight is the Fingercreepers he spawns, but you should be able to clear the arena of them with a few quick attacks.

When Count Ymir is finally defeated, fast travel and return to the throne room one last time. Leaning against a column near the throne is Jolan. Provided you have found the Iris of Grace and/or Iris of Occultation items during your journey, you will only be able to give her one of them.

Finally, the Iris of Occultation.

Select the Iris of Occultation. When Jolan dies, you can loot the glowing item she leaves behind to finally get the Sword of Night.

Note: If you haven’t found the Iris of Occultation yet, you can easily find it by defeating the Lesser Omenkiller in the Fort of Reprimand in Scadu Altus. Alternatively, you can kill the Lesser Ulcerated Spirit in the churchyard of the Shadow Keep, though this will require a bit more work.
