It sounds like Destiny 2 is finally leaving our solar system next year

Bungie has spent the last ten years exploring the depths of our solar system, but it looks like it’s finally getting ready to move on to something, or rather somewhere, something else. At least that’s what it sounds like will happen in Fateis the 11th year that is tentatively titled Borders.

In a recent interview with Edge, end magazine that was reissued through GamesRadar+some Bungie developers have discussed the future of the game, which is currently in its tenth year and halfway through its first “episode” – a notable break from the game’s seasonal pattern, although players are currently struggling to recognize what is fundamentally different. As they discussed what players should expect from next year, Bungie also held its hand up slightly, pointing to what’s to come fate 2including not only new characters and stories, but also seemingly new worlds.

At least that’s what Robbie Stevens, the game’s assistant director, seems to think fate 2, assumes. When discussing what’s next for the epic sci-fi/fantasy opera, Stevens revealed:

“A lot of that thinking about Year 11 and how we really start to get into the next journey after these episodes, we’re going to rely on that thinking as well. Because we’ve been doing this linear thing for a while and we want to get back to expanding our worlds and building worlds, expanding the universe of Fate generally.”

The emphasis on worlds and world building is the key to why Stevens’ statement excites me. in Fateis eruditionhumanity experienced a golden age of discovery and exploration before its war against the Darkness, which culminated in the battle against the Witness in The final form.

The conflict destroyed humanity and forced it to stand on its own two feet, meaning much of the series was spent mining space in the solar system from the forces of Darkness. For the first time in a long time, the Guardians are free to retreat and visit new and completely alien worlds.

It’s an exciting prospect that provides some of the fantasy players have had since the beginning Fate. While they’ve always understood the need to keep the story in our own solar system, you can’t reasonably give people a sci-fi game with ships and aliens and ask them to never expect to go anywhere else. Taken as a whole, Stevens’ banter, Borders naming and recent cutscene detailing a character’s dream of exploring the vastness of space with their partner certainly points to us getting out of Sol and seeing more of the galaxy!!

Considering how much more we’ve learned about alien species Fate from the start it feels like a foregone conclusion, but it’s exciting to think it’s almost here. We learned over the years a lot for the Hive and their home world of Fundament, and while it sounds inhospitable as hell, imagine seeing it sometime in the future? Caiatl, a Cabal commander who has become one of humanity’s greatest allies, often speaks of the Cabal Empire’s former capital, Torobatl, which was destroyed by the Hive War God, Xivu Arath. Despite having destroyed both of her siblings (Savathun and Oryx), Xivu Arat is still at large and the campaign against her may or may not begin with Thorobattle’s return!

The Elixni, who became known as the Fallen, still need a new homeworld after the collapse of Riis and the failure of Riis-Reborn in Europe. The final form even teased players with a look at the original civilization of the Witness, and according to this recent interview, their faction (the Fear) is clearly here to stay. And where exactly do the Vex come from and what is their whole business? There are so many big questions that need answering Fate still and increasingly it feels like ours the solar system is running out of solutions to provide. Time to go out.

fate 2 is an infamously complex and convoluted game, so I’m really looking forward to this soft reset that follows The final form. I’m even more excited about the clear direction he’s taking and how well he’s realizing that dream Fate which I had ten years ago.
