Samsung unveiled the latest versions of its foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, during its Unpacked event on Wednesday. Although the devices share many of the same features, there are some differences between their cameras, displays, and most importantly, prices. Here’s how foldable phones compare.
This story is part of Samsung eventCNET’s collection of news, tips and advice on Samsung’s most popular products.
Ultimately, the two foldables are different in approach: the book-style Z Fold 6 has a flip-top display that you use like a traditional smartphone, while the internal display unfolds for a near-tablet-sized screen to use for productivity and gaming. The Z Flip 6 clamshell, on the other hand, works like a traditional smartphone when unfolded, but when closed it has half the footprint, making it small enough to fit in your pocket or purse.
One of the biggest differences between the two is of course the display size. When closed, the Z Fold 6’s AMOLED display cover is 6.3 inches with a variable refresh rate of 1-120Hz, while the Z Flip 6’s external AMOLED display is 3.4 inches with a 60Hz refresh rate. Once open, the Z Fold 6’s internal display measures 7.6 inches, while the Z Flip 6’s measures 6.7 inches. Both internal AMOLED displays have a 1-120Hz refresh rate.
When it comes to rear cameras, the Z Fold 6 has a 50-megapixel wide, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide and a 10-megapixel 3x telephoto camera. The Z Flip 6 has a 50-megapixel wide and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera. Meanwhile, the Z Fold 6 has a 4-megapixel internal selfie camera under the display and a 10-megapixel selfie camera on the lid. The Z Flip 6 has a 10-megapixel front-facing camera.
Both phones are powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. Each comes with 12GB of RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of internal storage, while the Z Fold 6 also comes in a 1TB option. None of them have expandable storage.
Both phones run Android 14 out of the box, and Samsung promises seven years of software and security updates. The Z Fold 6 has a 4400 mAh battery and the Z Flip 6 has a 4000 mAh battery. Both devices feature 25-watt USB-C charging as well as wireless charging capability. You won’t find a headphone jack on either device.
Price may be one of the biggest deciding factors when choosing between the two. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 starts at $1,900, while the Z Flip 6 starts at $1,100. But one thing both devices have in common is that they cost $100 more than their predecessors. They are available for pre-order in the US now and will be available on July 24th.
