Here’s your recap of Evo 2024 announcements from SNK vs. Capcom and Terry Bogard to Heihachi Mishima’s resurrection and more

It was a historic weekend for the fighting game community at Evo 2024 with multiple records broken for individual tournament pool participants and becoming the biggest open esports event of all time, although there was more than the competition.

With another Evo officially in the books, we’re here to recap any announcements you may have missed over the past three days in the genre.

Outside of the ridiculous show that PGW|Hayao put on for Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, there was still plenty of new stuff on display for fans and some unexpected surprises.

Of course, we had news from Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, Guilty Gear Strive, and more to look at.

Unfortunately we didn’t get anything for Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection as a release date, but the developers of Street Fighter 6 have revealed that they really want to make a new crossover fighting game.

Let’s jump right in and review them in some sort of chronological order.

Kicking things off early on Friday, Bushiroad games finally revealed Meruem for Hunter x Hunter: Nen Impact in a new trailer, but that’s not all.

They also revealed the rest of the starting roster as well in the game’s opening cinematic, including Kite, Genthru, Morel, and Razor to bring it up to 16 characters.

However, we are still waiting for that release date.

Also on Friday, Cygames officially unveiled Versusia as the next DLC character for Granblue Versus and released her for play on the Evo floor for attendees.

That wasn’t all, of course, as they also released the Versusia trailer and release date, as well as revealing Vikala as the final member of the Season 1 additions.

Finally, Sandalphon has been teased along with confirmation of a second season of content that will likely begin in 2025.

SNK seemed to have the most to show of any developer this past weekend, and that of course included Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.

Kevin Ryan is the latest character to be revealed for the Garou sequel, and he wants to hit you really, really hard – though hopefully not like hard as it did in the original game.

On top of that, SNK also revealed that the new Fatal Fury will be released on PlayStation 4, as well as the previously announced PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC.

We knew going into the game that the new King of Fighters 15 special DLC characters would be revealed, and they turned out to be some classic crowd pleasers.

Vice and Mature return in December as supposedly the last fighters added to the game.

They didn’t really show anything more than their new designs, so we’ll have to wait a while longer to see their gameplay trailers and get more details.

SNK also had perhaps the biggest surprise of the entire event by canceling the re-release of SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos, which originally came out in 2003.

The latest official crossover fighter from the companies now includes a network rollback code, lobbies, a new gallery and more features.

SVC Chaos was released right then on Steam, but is now also available on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC.

MultiVersus made a surprise announcement that they would have something special to show off the Evo shortly before the event, but unfortunately it wasn’t the Scorpion.

Instead, we should see the reveal of Samurai Jack and Beetlejuice coming to MVS Season 2.

And Jack will arrive along with the new update very soon.

Although unfortunately leaked a bit early, Arc System Works has revealed their full DLC lineup for Guilty Gear Strive Season 4 with some interesting surprises.

Fan favorites like Dizzy and Venom are finally set to return along with newcomer Unika from the upcoming Guilty Gear anime, but the most interesting choice of them all was Lucy from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

They’re also releasing a special open beta for Strive’s new 3v3 mode later this week.

So it turns out that Katsuhiro Harada lied to us all when he told us that Heihachi Mishima was completely dead after the events of the last game.

Despite fulfilling the main story of Tekken 8, Heihachi is alive and returns as the third DLC character after Lidia later this year.

It looks like he will also be heavily featured in the upcoming Story Mode expansion.

Capcom didn’t have as much to show at Evo this year compared to 2023, but that doesn’t mean they came up empty-handed.

They released the official teaser trailer for Terry Bogard in Street Fighter 6, which allowed us to see the wild wolf in the RE Engine with his classic Fatal Fury look.

It gives fans a preview of Terry’s World Tour mode, but we’ll have to wait a little longer for the actual gameplay and details.

Although Uzuki was originally planned for August, French Bread has revealed that Under Night In-Birth II’s first character is coming this week.

Diesel Legacy: The Brazen Age revealed Damkina as a new playable character and introduced her at their Evo booth.

Rivals of Aether 2 has announced Orcane as a new fighter, and the developers have revealed that all future characters for the game will be free.

Given how crazy this weekend was, there’s a good chance Evo will reveal more that we ended up missing, so if there’s anything we’ve missed, let us know in the comments.

And tell us what your favorite part of Evo was this year too.
