I increasingly judge games close to Souls not by the height of their bosses or the depth of their dungeons, but by the cleverness of their shortcuts, and Flintlock: Siege Of Dawn has my favorite shortcuts in an era. Rather than simply being routes on the other side of a locked door – although there are plenty of such Lordrannish traps to be found in this game – they consist of aerial chains of magic, purple triangles that suck you into them when you hold down a button. They lend strength to a sprawling, faux-Napoleonic world that could otherwise be a collection of atmospheric strolls between equivalents of fire and combat defined by strained resource systems. They’re idiot-proof grappling points from which you can launch yourself to another triangle, a ledge of upgrade materials, or a whizzing musketeer in dire need of a ground-pound.
